Importance of Skill Building


Skills are those things which help you to do certain tasks. Skills which can be learn through work, study, or by doing certain activities in your leisure time.

According to Merriam-Webster, “the ability to use one’s knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance”.

For success, skills are needed because it builds confidence and independent in life. And to build it determination and practice is needed because almost every skill can be learned and improved. There are two kind skills:

  • -Hard and
  • -Soft skills

 Both are very important in order to be successful in one’s profession.

Hard Skills:

Hard skills are those tangible and technical skills which can be easily demonstrated by a candidate qualification and specific professional experiences. It is usually quantifiable and teachable such as computer programming, accounting strategies, Photoshop techniques etc. which stays through your entire career/life.


  • Proficiency in foreign language,
  • Computer programming,
  • Typing speed,
  • Degree of certificate, etc.

Soft Skills:

Soft skills are those which are intangible and non- technical abilities that are look from the candidate. It relates to one’s personality and ‘peoples skills’. It can’t be quantified. A doctor is required to have the ability to diagnose and prescribed treatments-hard skills. But a doctor is highly regarded by their patients if he has the soft skills- emotional intelligence, approachability and has that ability to be someone whose instruction can be trust for.


  • Communication skills,
  • Leadership,
  • Team work,
  • Self-motivation,
  • Problem solving, etc.

Why skills are important in Nepal

According to World Bank Calculation, one third of the working age population in low- and middle-income countries lack the basic skills required to get quality jobs.

Global economy which is rapidly changing requires workers to develop problem-solving, leadership, and technical skills. Because unskilled workers face unemployment or takes low wage jobs, which reduces labor force productivity and limits the economic investment. Also the private sector cannot be flourishing due to unskilled workers.

Quality education:

According to educationist Janarjan Sharma “The real quality education is the ability to convert learning’s into practice, ability to analyse a subject matter and complete from one’s own perspective of an assigned task in an excellent way”.

It is related to producing citizen who is well equipped with knowledge and skills, change oriented, and aware of traditional norms and values, entrepreneurial, able to compete in the world market, well-disciplined with a good character, and so on.

Quality = execution/ assumption.

Skills are important in Nepal because its development leads to the financial growth and community development of a country. Building hard and soft skills will help them to stand out in the society, generate employment. Improving once personal skills helps a country to stand independently.

Development of skills is needed because our country is weak in monetary and employment generating. Being skilled, one can create jobs, use the resources effectively, generating skills one can win heart of the people around the world and keeping their head high by virtue of once hard work can stand out Nepal among the crowd of many countries.

Economic benefits:

To be able to fight poverty is the inaccessibility of higher education and training i.e. developing skills. If the citizen cannot afford education and cannot develop skills then the citizen cannot get better paying jobs also the country will be trapped in poverty.

Support to knowledge and lifelong learning skills programme (Skills)

A programme which is implemented by UNDP, Ministry of Education, Council for Technical and Vocational Training-funded by UNDP is actively working in generating manpower in all district of Nepal since April 2015 and the programme will end on December 2020.

It was envisioned, working closely with MOE and CTEVT to reform the TVET policy 2012, to make the provision therein more practical and responsive to the present day demands of the market.

Some of the accomplishment so far:

  • Private sector engagement in TVET policy reviewed with the involvement of representatives of business and industries in collaboration with FNCCI in 2016.
  • TVET impact evaluation methodology developed in 2016.
  • Signalling of Labour Market Demands for workers with Technical Skills foreign employment. The labour market signalling assessment study completed in close collaboration and partnership with the CTEVT in 2015 and 2016.
  • National TVET MIS developed in 2016 and database synchronization has been completed in 2017
  • Labour market assessment in agriculture sector conducted and report disseminated to the line ministries and stakeholders in 2016.4


Skill plays a vital role in once personal growth as well as country’s development. It can ensure that Nepal future, and how we leave behind for our children. This is why skills development matters.
